I Can’t See
I can’t see
the forest for the trees
trees are burning
eyes are burning
skin is burning
hearts are burning
teeth are burning
the fine ash of your dark dreams
floating in holy waters
or buried in red earth
I can’t see
and you?
you still see the sea
of heads before you
under you
You have never seen
such a crowd before
dizzy with yourself
busy with the scene
in which you are the emperor
I can’t see
and you?
you have a clear vision
parking lots burning
side-walks burning
trees burning
grass burning
from the vantage point
where you perch
self-appointed emperor
playing his tune
for burning bodies
and buried bones
to hear
